Arachnophobia - A Spider Phobia You Can Beat

It is normal for everyone to have fears, but having a phobia is a more serious problem. A phobia is an illogical fear that is seemingly beyond one's control. Phobias are categorized as a kind of anxiety disorder, and often trigger nervousness and panic attacks in a sufferer. When a person has an intense phobia, they grow so desperate to get away from their fear that it interferes with their daily activities and their ability to function in life.

Among the most common phobias are arachnophobia, the fear of spiders, acrophobia, the fear of heights, and claustrophobia, a fear of enclosed spaces. Arachnophobia is the number one most common phobia. While lots of people have a fear of spiders, those with arachnophobia have an unusual amount of fear. Even a photo or realistic rendering of a spider can make some people uneasy. Some people have panic attacks or get hysterical at the sight of a spider. They might do anything in order to avoid a spider; for example, people with extreme arachnophobia might attempt to climb out of a moving car if they see a spider next to them.

Sufferers often feel ashamed of their unrestrained responses. Other people and even the sufferers themselves might find their behavior excessive. Their anxiety over spiders and their reaction to arachnids may cause other problems as well. Arachnophobia and other phobias may lead to a condition known as agoraphobia.

Agoraphobia can arise when an individual is afraid of being in any potentially stressful area or situation. For a person with arachnophobia, this means avoiding any area a spider may be living, new places, and even avoiding leaving the house or going outside altogether. This can badly interfere with a person's life. A person may be afraid of having panic attacks or humiliating him or herself by losing control. Many people find themselves constantly stressed over these feelings.

People with phobias frequently struggle to control their fears. This is because the root of the problem exists at the unconscious level of the mind; so conscious willpower or effort does not work to control a fear. A phobia is best treated at the unconscious level, which is why Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are the best phobia treatments.

There are many different hypnotherapy programs available for curing phobias. Most use conventional forms of hypnosis that depend on post-hypnotic suggestions with very exact wording to work against phobias. These days, post-hypnotic suggestions often do not work because most people have a tendency to question everything. And since today's generation is likely to do the opposite of what they are told, they resist post-hypnotic suggestions and experience a polar response.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy differs from traditional hypnosis because it uses indirect suggestions that are embedded in conversation. This makes them difficult for the conscious mind to reject, so they will usually make it through to the unconscious mind and be accepted.

The process typically starts by using hypnotherapy to make you feel very relaxed and calm. Then, instead of simply "telling" your unconscious mind what to do, Ericksonian techniques use stories and metaphors to steer your mind into a desirable thought process.

NLP techniques work by targeting the particular thought process that creates an extreme phobia and using it to extinguish the fear. Because of this, NLP will be effective on any phobia.

People respond better to the combination of NLP and Ericksonian techniques than to conventional hypnosis because instead of hearing orders, the unconscious mind is convinced to follow a new, more logical line of thinking. These programs are especially effective for people who are analytical, critical thinkers and people who like to think on their own.

You do not need a unique hypnosis program for each different phobia. A single program that includes multiple sessions containing the perfect combination of Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP techniques can treat any phobia. Furthermore, a well designed program will be effective for anyone. The mix of a multitude of techniques in several different sessions guarantees success for anyone who uses them. By going through each step of the process, people often amaze themselves at how quickly they overcome their phobias.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP focus on transforming irrational behaviors and fears into rational, calm responses. For many individuals suffering from debilitating fears such as a phobia, this is a life-changing treatment. Hypnosis is an effective tool for beating fears and anxieties to live a fuller, better life.
